    I often say my work is best described as holding on and letting go. Letting go of all the doubt, fear and  notions and holding on for the good stuff to come through. This painting was years in the making - it just wouldn't quit! I turned it to the wall for a while and then, one evening, it sort of painted itself. It was a time when I was attempting to close out my Mayo Lakes series but they kept turning up on the canvas. This is  a sort of swan-song to my Mayo Lakes series,  bridging the gap to The Big Sky collection that followed. It is, I think, about devotion -  redemption and renewal - new beginnings and moving on to new, ancient landscapes.

    A Second Coming in Ciarraí

    Painted in a series of breathy layers, ‘A Second Coming – In Ciarraí’ was made while on residency in Cill Rialaig, in Kerry. It commemorates the life of a friend. My residency was in January when the world seemed slowly to begin again. From high up on Bolus Head during those short, moist days, I wondered how do we distinguish time and mark out days. Indeed, how do we capture the essence of a life – but in breaths. And so this painting was made slowly in lots of very loose layers. I wanted to paint like breath on glass – similar to the way weather, hovering between sea and sky, makes a ghostly impression over The Skelligs. The painting became a sum of it’s parts – lots of light layers which, when combined attempt to capture the essence of light and a life.

    From my ‘Land of Plenty’ collection, ‘Across the sea to the Skelligs’ was painted following a residency at Cill Rialaig in Kerry. Situated on Bolus Head – Ireland’s most south-westerly point, the residency is set in a famine village that looks out at the Skelligs – the early Christian monastic islands. The rugged sea seemed to span a mystical journey of centuries and yet I felt connected by instinct and some sort of magic thread to this ancient other world.

    At Inchydoney was one of the first landscapes I made shortly after returning to live in Ireland in 2007. I had just begun to drive and so was, I think, for the first time in my life - consciously looking where I was going. My first 'big' solo trip was to drive to Inchydoney  from Cork City  - it felt like a mission and magic to arrive safely.  Upon arrival there was a feeling of just that 'arrival', being in the right place, at the right time. I had lived overseas for 15 years and it had taken me years to arrive but I felt the 'landing' then and there. It felt like home and every time I visit Inchydoney it feels just the same. It's a fresh, clean place where you can swim in the sea while looking at cows! There's a connection there that is rare and wonder-full!

        From my 'Sean Nós & The Sea' Collection, Contentment was painted in my studio but harks back to happy times close to the boglands in Ciarraí.     At a young(-er!) and (more!) impressionable age, I read May Sarton’s A Journal of a Solitude. I remember being floored by the line ‘Hope, but for what?’. The lack of hope or vision or joie de vivre struck me as utterly sad and terrifying too. I have known the feelings of being rudderless and at times been terribly lost. I think that is part of the human experience. Many of us anticipated the recent Covid quiet period with dread – it smacked of ‘the end is nigh’ and yet on the other side of it, many of us feel renewed and are facing forwards with some hope. And we are certain what we are hoping for. On the other side of solitude, I think the things we are hoping and hopeful for are not ‘things’ – there is a communion in that too. It reminds me of the words of another great writer, Mary Oliver: ‘Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, The world offers itself to your imagination calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting – over and over announcing your place in the family of things.

    During my final year in secondary school, I had, for a brief period of time, a substitute English teacher. I remember this woman for many reasons but principally because of here peculiar analogies. She told us we should always remember that a good story was like a fish with its tail in its mouth! In the decades that has swooshed past since I left school, I have forgotten a LOT but I could never shake that analogy! And so here I am at the end of one collection facing towards the next one.       'The Dardanelles' was one of my first large paintings. I made it on the shore of Lough Mask after a day  fishing (getting drenched!) with my father. As is a very strict tradition, we break for lunch (flasks of tea and ham sandwiches) on  the Dardanelles, a small outcrop of islands in the middle of the lake. Fishermen assemble to tell each other lies and forecast further rain. Despite the lack of lavatory and the very inclement conditions, I love it  - there is a sort of 'communion' to these little islands where I feel completely 'at one' with nature and my 'ol Pop.
