Moons ago when I first began painting while living in New Zealand, my lovely friends Sinead & Mark gifted me a copy of Tim Winton’s ‘Cloud Street’ – they inscribed it with a quote from Joyce’s ‘A Portrait of the Artist’, as follows:
“Welcome, O life! I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race.”
I think often of this quote, especially and always when beginning new work. It puts me in mind of infinite possibilities and the brilliance and terror of beginnings. Anything or nothing can happen. Tis all before me, like a sunrise or a sunset.
