It’s no surprise how much I love Kerry, I feel VERY at home there. It was the place where I learned to truly see the Irish landscape. I started painting the boglands but migrated towards the shoreline and the sacred Skelligs, so there is a bit of everything in this collection.

I often say my work is best described as holding on and letting go. Letting go of all the doubt, fear and  notions and holding on for the good stuff to come through. This painting was years in the making - it just wouldn't quit! I turned it to the wall for a while and then, one evening, it sort of painted itself. It was a time when I was attempting to close out my Mayo Lakes series but they kept turning up on the canvas. This is  a sort of swan-song to my Mayo Lakes series,  bridging the gap to The Big Sky collection that followed. It is, I think, about devotion -  redemption and renewal - new beginnings and moving on to new, ancient landscapes.

  • A Hymn to the Silence

    275.00695.00

I have been fortunate to undertake many artist residencies. It’s a period of time – for me, it’s been anything from a week to three months – most usually spent in solitude, contemplating new work quietly. The kind of time most parents would sell their teeth for! The quiet gets intense in the beginning – thoughts of being an utter fraud with a wasted life, devoid of any talent get noisy – and days and nights are long. I believe – wholeheartedly – if you are to make your own unique work, you must hear your own unique thoughts – warts and all – thus, there is nothing for it but to turn off your phone, walk in all weather and face forward the maelstrom of the mind. Slowly, fresh grounds of a new idea, germs of connectedness with nature shoot surely – and an enchantedness with the work begins again. Soon the silence that was solitary is now a balm – your thoughts and indeed your place on the earth seem to rhyme – or at least have a co-herence – a rhythm! It’s then, in that super sweet spot, I have my best shots of inspiration – sometimes it seems a simple download, a hymn to the silence.

  • A Second Coming in Ciarraí

    275.00695.00
Painted in a series of breathy layers, ‘A Second Coming – In Ciarraí’ was made while on residency in Cill Rialaig, in Kerry. It commemorates the life of a friend. My residency was in January when the world seemed slowly to begin again. From high up on Bolus Head during those short, moist days, I wondered how do we distinguish time and mark out days. Indeed, how do we capture the essence of a life – but in breaths. And so this painting was made slowly in lots of very loose layers. I wanted to paint like breath on glass – similar to the way weather, hovering between sea and sky, makes a ghostly impression over The Skelligs. The painting became a sum of it’s parts – lots of light layers which, when combined attempt to capture the essence of light and a life.

  • Across the Sea to the Skelligs

    275.00695.00
From my ‘Land of Plenty’ collection, ‘Across the sea to the Skelligs’ was painted following a residency at Cill Rialaig in Kerry. Situated on Bolus Head – Ireland’s most south-westerly point, the residency is set in a famine village that looks out at the Skelligs – the early Christian monastic islands. The rugged sea seemed to span a mystical journey of centuries and yet I felt connected by instinct and some sort of magic thread to this ancient other world.

  • All at Sea

    275.00695.00
Painted during a time of change and in response to days spent in solitude on the shoreline. Looking out to sea and documenting it in layers felt like a meditation – a sort of roadmap in to serenity. As an island nation, I think we can be less than cognisant of the dramatic impact the sea and its proximity has on us and our lives. Taking time to really look and allow ourselves to ‘be’ all at sea is for me, invigorating, life enhancing and often life-affirming.

  • Anam Cara' was painted following a walk with my lovely friend Anne. A true Anam Cara or 'Soul friend’. Time spent with Anne is rare but delicious time - that feels 'out of time', timeless. It's feels to my mind like a sort of dream-time. Extra special post-covid - when time with friends was all the sweeter and more precious. Dreamtime or Dreaming for Australian Aboriginal people represents the time when the Ancestral Spirits progressed over the land and created life. Dreaming is the word used to explain how life came to be; it is the stories and beliefs behind creation. Walking with Anne in Ciarraí, up Bolus Head, through wild flower filled hedges or along the shoreline in Ballinskelligs Bay gives great context to these places. Anne has kindly shared her connection to these places and her own sense of the stories and belief behind creation and being alive. It often feels as if during this time we are accompanied by ancestral spirits. As well we might... I came to know Anne (and her wonderful husband Pat) when I became interested in the work of her father, the late (great!) Micheal Kirby. The Kirby senior began writing his thoughts and reflections on life and nature in his eighth decade. Skelligside was published by Lilliput Press when he was 78! Skelligs Calling, Skelligs Sunset and many volumes of poetry were to follow. More recently, Skelligs Haul ( published Lilliput 2019) brings together a fantastic collection of his prose and poetry (available to buy @lilliputpress online). AND he was a very accomplished painter! ). The writer Urquhart described Michael Kirby as "A man who understands the true value of life.. He shows us that everything that lives is connected".

  • Contentment

    275.00695.00
From my 'Sean Nós & The Sea' Collection, Contentment was painted in my studio but harks back to happy times close to the boglands in Ciarraí. It is, in recent years, a contentment to me to take inspiration out in the landscape before incorporating it into the rhythm of a studio schedule. For a long time, I felt perpetually on residency – out in some landscape or other, it was enchanting but often unsettling. Now a new studio rhythm feels an enhancement, an orderly way to tap into influences and mine memories.

  • Fools Rush In

    275.00695.00
From my 'The Idea of an Island'  Collection created in response to Spike Island - once a remote monastery, a fortress and the world's largest prison! This collection attempts to present the contrast of what is potentially an idyll and a place of pain and suffering. The palette in these paintings is itself a contrast -  a mix from cheery pinks to a spectrum of blacks. 'Fools Rush In' was made during the isolation and draws on the idyll of the sea - it's spectacular beauty which can be so comforting - but also it's inherent power and danger. One of the first things I did post-lockdown was to swim in the sea - it was freezing but full of freedom! 'Fools Rush In' I hope illustrates life's contrasts - how nothing is ever completely lost or indeed perfect - but made up of a series of magnificent moments. The present happening over and over again.

  • Oceania Calling

    275.00695.00
'Oceania Calling' is from my Mayo Lakes series and is a contemplation of the pull of one place from another. In Mayo, you can't but be conscious of all the people who left their home there to make lives elsewhere. Poverty and hard times made their mark on the populous and it is imbued in the landscape.  A stillness but also a sense of constant unfolding. There is a beauty to it that makes me think again of nature as perpetual motion.

  • On Solid Ground

From ‘The Outliers’ collection, which marks ten years painting in Ireland, ‘On Solid Ground’  is a reflection on and a distillation of 10 years of residencies and time out painting in Ireland. It was painted in my studio but brings together an amalgam of places that have bolstered, sustained and influenced my painting practice. In his book ‘The Outliers’, Malcolm Gladwell asserts that it takes 10,000 hours practise to master a skill. Some time during the past decade in Ireland, I have crossed over that threshold which has delivered me to this solid ground.

  • On The Beach, Ballinskelligs

    275.00695.00

From my ‘Land of Plenty’ collection, ‘On the Beach, Ballinskelligs’ was painted on a freezing cold but bright day – on my hands and knees on Reen Pier – the departure point for ancient Skellig Michael. It was my very first large painting. I was on my first painting retreat in Cill Rialaig, having recently returned to live in Ireland, following 15 years overseas. That trip and this painting marked a turning point – a shift into truly appreciating the spirit, abundance and latent beauty of my own country.

  • Samhradh, Samhradh

    275.00695.00
'Samhradh, Samhradh' is a celebration of the coming of Summer  - and the lightness and loveliness of that time of the year. It was made in homage to memories of childhood and time spent on Lough Mask. When painting, I often think I am trying to capture times past - or maybe times to come - to encapsulate the sensation of memories . As a guiding principle I often refer to what Seamus Heaney so beautifully termed ‘..the now of perception and the then of fulfilment’.

  • Stranded

    275.00695.00
Inspired by the Van Morrison song of the same name, 'Stranded' was made during yet another Covid lockdown. To be fair it wasn't all grim. As it was one of the last lockdowns, by which point we had all learned to love our little island a little bit more. So when I found myself solo on a long strand on one of those long quiet days - being 'Stranded' became a gift,  a whole new blessing. I lived with the original painting for a good while before I let it go, it brings me back to that peaceful place and acted as a daily reminder  - to snatch moments of peace regardless of life's pace and to let a whole lot of stuff slide.

  • Inspired by Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass poems, ‘The Beauty of this Earth and the Majesty of the Sea’ commemorates the absolute magical stillness of walking the shoreline at dawn and dusk. During residencies in Mayo and Kerry, I have been fortunate to enjoy topping and tailing my days by walking in solitude at the shoreline. My mind may be full or brittle but the constancy of the tide eases the free-flow and soon, with no effort on my part – my breath keeps time with the tide and my thoughts harmonise – or dissipate. Inevitably,  I am struck by the stillness and the absolute magnificence and majesty of nature, the earth and the sea – and my own absolute insignificance.

  • The Precipice

    275.00695.00
“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” – Anais Nin – When I visited Spike Island, I was struck by how stunningly beautiful it is, how wild and yet how much grows there. It feels otherworldly – a strange edgy energy is pervasive. I couldn’t help thinking about all the pilgrims, monks and prisoners who have passed through. The island’s small surface area and it’s situation make it impossible to forget you are on an island. I wondered were those temporary residents taunted by the lapping tide from the far shore. Many must have contemplated making a swim for it! It would require courage to leave and maybe another courage to stay. I think all of us in this quiet time have contemplated change – our personal precipice. For me making these big paintings is a personal jumping off point. When painting, I jot down notes – often a series of words – random ramblings and gems. For this Precipice – I noted: Resilience – Connectedness – Home – Belonging I think all of us – pilgrims, prisoners and painters – maybe sing to the same tune.

  • There will be Time

    275.00695.00
Inhabitants of Spike Island – whether monks or prisoners – must have had a particular relationship with time. The Covid Lockdown time, and spending so much of it in isolation gave us all pause to reflect on time and how we spend it. When you start to think of time as a man made construct – it can get quite loose or dense. Eitherway, during the quiet time I had time to be in nature and to think of all the things I would do post-lockdown. First up was to see and be in the sea – There will be Time – is a tribute to looking forward, even when things are sticky and having fate that there is time – and good times – before us!
