This painting, while spare, was made in many, many layers. It started out as a very lively sketch but as more layers were added and the light shifted in the studio, it began to feel like a meditation in paint. It feels for me like being on the precipice of an abundant, brilliant future but still holding back so as not to let go on the grip of the past.
