    Crossing Mayo

While on residency, I felt the need to get out and see the landscape – I was waiting for a sunny day but days without rain are rare there. This painting was inspired by a cross-county drive on a rainy day.

    Dusk Over Rossbeg

While on residency I stay in Rossbeg – a wonderful location with a heartstopping view of Clew Bay. This was the view from my bedroom – I would wake every day and check to see if I had dreamed it!

    The Boathouse at Lough Carra

When I was originally told about Lough Carra – someone described it as 'being like a radox bath' – I completely understood when I got there – when sunlight reflects on the Marl Limestone base it gives off an incredibe floury. Turquoise sheen that has to be seen to be believed.

    On the Lough Shore

This painting is from BallyGarry Quay in Partry – where my Dad, his friend John and I set off on Lough Mask to fish. My family has been fishing Lough Mask for over 50 years and we have great hopes everytime we set out from this special place.

    North Mayo Retrospective

I was fortunate to be in Mayo in time to visit the retrospective of Hughie O' Donoghue's North Mayo Paintings. While driving back from Ballina to Westport, I saw the landscape again in the colours Hughie had used – it helped me to get a grip on the work I was making in the Mayo Landscape.

  • Paul Henry's Mayo
    Paul Henry's Mayo

It is impossible to travel in Mayo and not be mindful of Paul Henry's Mayo. While in Mayo and out on Achill Island I was constantly aware of his work – he captures the colour and mood of the landscape with such entirety that one could almost think the landscape was informed by his paintings rather than vice versa. This is my homage to him and the county of his inspiration.

  • A View from the Reek
    A View from the Reek

While on residency at The Customs House in Westport, Co Mayo – I was amazed at how the mountain Croagh Patrick – known locally as 'The Reek' – dominates the landscape – it is such an integral part of life there.IT would be wrong to leave without climbing it. Although a very steep and challenging climb – it is worth it for the view – which gives an entirely different perspective on the landscape. From the summit you can see out across Clew Bay (on a clear day!). I was amazed at how flat the land was and the dominance of bog lands below.
